12/2-9: Havana—Here are a few snapshots of the people connected to the project “The Closest Farthest Away.” The show was a hybrid film/live theatre piece that took place as part of the festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana. The project’s artistic development represented a groundbreaking collaboration of atists from the US and Cuba—spearheaded by Sage and Aleigh Lewis, directed by Chi-Wang Yang. One of the very cool things about the show is that Aleigh Lewis was onstage with a camera throughout, layering and combining live and pre-recorded film images. There were moments when it was impossible to tell that a character (on film that was shot in Cuba)— interacting with the live actor on stage—was not actually there in person. Holographic! The story is of American scientist and a Cuban doctor who are in love and struggling with how to be together in the same place. Word is that the story was inspired by that of Yrak Saenz and Beth Boone—Yrak, a hip hop artist and rapper with Doble Filo lives in Havana. Beth is head of Miami Light Project and lives in Miami.
